Shipwrights & Builders

The yards behind the world's finest custom sportfish, center console, and motor yacht โ€” documented by people who know them from the water up.

Built on Knowledge of the Yards

Every builder listed here has been evaluated by brokers who have walked the yards, studied the construction, and represented their vessels in the market. We do not list builders by advertisement. We list them by reputation, by construction standard, and by relevance to the buyers and sellers we serve across the Eastern Seaboard and the Bahamas.

The finest custom sportfishing yards in the world โ€” each building to commission, to standard, and to a legacy that defines the genre.

Garlington Yachts

Est. Early 1980s
Stuart, Florida

Garlington Yachts

Founded in the early 1980s when Richard Garlington simply decided to build a better boat, Garlington Yachts has spent four decades setting the standard for the custom express sportfisherman. Enlisting U.S. Navy submarine designer Dan McCarthy to engineer the hull, the result was a deep-V platform renowned for its soft, dry ride in heavy offshore seas. From the 44 Express to the 71 Flybridge, every Garlington is built without compromise โ€” clean lines, tournament-ready cockpits, and a pedigree that places it in the same conversation as Rybovich and Merritt. The Landeweer family continues that legacy today with the same unrelenting commitment to craft.

Merritt Boat & Engine Works

Est. 1948
Pompano Beach, Florida

Merritt Boat & Engine Works

Founded in 1948 by brothers Franklin Roy and Ennis Merritt on a ten-acre tract along the Intracoastal Waterway in Pompano Beach, Merritt Boat & Engine Works began as a repair and service yard for charter boats. By 1955, sons Buddy and Allen had joined the family operation and turned it toward what it would become: one of the most revered custom sportfishing yards in the world. Buddy built boats for one purpose โ€” to catch fish โ€” and the results spoke for themselves. Together with Rybovich, Merritt helped define the Florida sportfisherman and fuel the growth of big-game fishing worldwide. Still family-owned and operating from that same Pompano Beach yard more than seventy-five years on, every Merritt remains a fully custom commission built to a standard that has never wavered.

Spencer Yachts

Founded in 1996 by Captain Paul Spencer โ€” a veteran offshore captain who grew up working the charter docks around Oregon Inlet โ€” Spencer Yachts began under a tin shed in Manns Harbor, North Carolina with no power and no plumbing, and a clear vision of what a performance sportfisherman should be. Today, operating from two facilities in Manns Harbor and Wanchese, Spencer builds fully custom cold-molded sportfishing yachts from 37 to 87 feet, blending the classic Carolina flare with the sleek, fast lines of the Florida builders that inspired them. Every hull is constructed in-house, every tower, fuel tank, and metal component fabricated on site. Now continued by Paul's son Daniel Spencer, the yard remains a family operation building boats that perform as well as they look โ€” which is saying something.

Jim Smith Tournament Boats

Est. 1959
Stuart, Florida

Jim Smith Tournament Boats

The Jim Smith story begins not in a boatyard but on a racetrack. James Claude Smith spent twenty years building and racing biplanes, hydroplanes, and outboard race boats before retiring to Florida and turning his engineering instincts toward sportfishing. In 1959, in Stuart, Florida, he launched the 35-foot Boca Jima โ€” a cold-molded double diagonal cedar hull powered by a pair of custom 409 Chevy Daytona engines that ran 44 knots and left the rest of the fleet standing. The modern sportfisherman as we know it traces its lineage directly to that boat. Today, under the ownership and direction of John Vance, who acquired the yard in 1989, Jim Smith Tournament Boats continues that tradition in Stuart โ€” building entirely custom, cold-molded wood sportfishers one vessel at a time, to a standard of efficiency, speed, and craftsmanship that has influenced virtually every serious custom builder that followed. The bloodline behind Spencer, Bayliss, Weaver, and others runs straight through this yard.

Center Console

From catamaran platforms built for twin worlds to offshore deep-V center consoles engineered for the Outer Banks, these are the builders redefining what a fishing boat can be.

Costa Custom Boats

Custom Builder
Florida

Costa Custom Boats

Costa Custom Boats has carved out a singular niche in the center console market by doing something most builders have not had the confidence to commit to: building exclusively on a catamaran hull. The result is a platform that delivers a dramatically shallow draft, exceptional stability at rest and in a following sea, and offshore range that belies the boat's footprint. The 264 Hybrid Cat runs effectively in 15 inches of water while carrying the fuel and fishability to make serious offshore runs to the Keys or the Bahamas. The 34 SV pushes that concept further with luxury appointments, custom upholstery, and quad outboard power in a fully loaded package that turns heads at any dock. For the buyer who fishes both worlds โ€” shallow and deep โ€” Costa has built the answer.

Caymas Boats

Est. 2018
Ashland City, Tennessee

Caymas Boats

Founded in 2018 by Earl Bentz โ€” the marine industry veteran behind Stratos, Javelin, and Triton Boats โ€” Caymas arrived with a clear mandate: build the finest fiberglass fishing vessels on the water, backed by a team carrying over 1,600 years of combined industry experience. The saltwater center console and catamaran lineup has been the headline of that story. Built on the patented Stepped-V Ventilated Tunnel hull that delivers a 15 percent speed advantage over conventional V-hull construction, Caymas center consoles are engineered to fish hard and run efficiently without sacrificing family comfort. The recently debuted 44 CT catamaran โ€” unveiled at the 2025 Miami International Boat Show โ€” signals exactly where this builder is headed. Caymas is moving fast, and the industry is paying attention.

Regulator Marine

Est. 1988
Edenton, North Carolina

Regulator Marine

Built and tested against the demanding conditions of North Carolina's Outer Banks since 1988, Regulator Marine has spent nearly four decades earning its place as the standard bearer for offshore center console construction. The Lou Codega-designed deep-V hull delivers Regulator's signature ride โ€” sharp, predictable, and confidence-inspiring in conditions that send lesser boats to the dock. The lineup runs from 23 to 41 feet, and the recently launched Regulator 35 โ€” equipped with triple Yamaha 350s, a standard Seakeeper Ride, and a completely redesigned transom and fishbox arrangement โ€” signals that Regulator is not resting on its legacy. Not fully custom, but built to a standard the custom world respects.
