Tony Fleming spent twenty years at American Marine, which built Grand Banks, before leaving in 1985 with an idea for a pilothouse. He and Anton Emmerton toured Taiwanese yards that summer, picked Tung Hwa near Kaohsiung, and started hull number one of the Fleming 55. Over a hundred delivered by 1997, and the family still runs it.
