Robert Newton and his sons were running a custom yard in Hong Kong as American Marine when they commissioned a 36-foot diesel cruiser with deliberately workmanlike lines. The first Grand Banks 36 went down the ways at Junk Bay in 1964 and 1,141 followed; the 42 that came a year later is the shape the whole American trawler idea is built on.
