A German immigrant called Henry Luhrs was supplying ships in New York in the 1830s and ended up owning a chandlery and a ship of his own. His grandson, another Henry, opened a yard at Morgan, New Jersey about a century later; under sons John and Warren it was turning out more than 1,200 boats a year.
